Transcription: Amniocentesis is a procedure performed between the 15th and 18th week of pregnancy. A needle is inserted through the pregnant woman's abdominal wall, through the uterine wall, and into the amniotic sac, which contains mostly water, the fetus's urine, and sloughed-off fetal cells. A small amount of fluid is removed. Tests performed on the sample can include examination of DNA for markers of genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis, examination of chromosomes for disorders such as Down syndrome, and screening of fluid for evidence of anatomical problems.
